Melissa says about herself
I began my involvement with homeopathy in 1982, when I was 40 and it was like meeting my soul’s purpose head on. I walked into it like a duck walks into water, as if I were born to do this amazing thing. I devoured this new knowledge with a great hunger. I had teachers, who told me there was only one way it should be done, and I would try it and if it seemed to work I would incorporate it. I had teachers who told me to do what was appropriate and not always stick to the dogma. They were the ones who gave me the freedom to explore beyond the existing parameters. I was using and practicing homeopathy long before I was officially qualified. I was teaching it before I graduated. It seemed everything I had ever done led to this astonishing encounter. It involved science as well as spirit. It involved soul as well as body. It brought me the link I had been unknowingly seeking all of my life. I had found my passion. I had come home.
Even now as my sight gets longer and my memory shorter, I am so pleased to know that the learning continues and the excitement is sustained. I have been teaching for 21 years and practicing for 25. I have seen thousands of clients and supervised many students and each encounter adds to my awareness. It has never felt routine, and I have rarely been bored. Exploring the depth of remedies through use and proofings has enriched my life beyond expectations. It has deepened my own spiritual awareness in understanding the connections we have with the whole of the universe. If a minute and immeasurable dose of a substance can have such a profound effect, then surely we have an intimate connection with the spirit of that substance, be it animal, plant or mineral. When you witness something so profound and so often, it is impossible not to be awed by it.
My first book, “The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party”, came from a series of seminars I did about how remedies reflect the way we relate to the substance culturally, as well as spiritually. I really enjoyed writing it.
Over the years I have been strongly focused on women’s health issues, especially trying to educate about the poisonous effects of hormone abuse. This is why I developed the remedies Folliculinum (oestrone), Lac humanum, and Luna. I wrote my second book “Women Ripening Through The Menopause” as an outcry against such an important rite of passage being treated as a disease. I was appauled at seeing so many women frightened by the horror story images being promoted by the pharmaceutical industry. It is a story of how what’s happening now is a continuum from times past, and if looked at through different eyes, the menopause can be a very empowering time.
I have conducted proofings on a variety of remedies, Usnea, Apple, Silkworm, Lac lupaninum, Octopus, Venus, Amniotic Fluid, and Umbilical Cord. The way I have conducted proofings over the years has evolved into one that works so well for all concerned, and I am writing about this evolution in my new book about the Matridonal (mother gift) remedies. At the moment it has the working title of “Beyond Beginnings”, and includes Lac humanum, Folliculinum, Placenta, Amniotic Fluid, Vernix, and Umbilical Cord.
I put my long years of experience in women’s health into creating a distance learning course for the British Institute of Homeopathy, covering everything from conception to old age. Although I have now retired from this organization, I am in the process of releasing a revised version of the material as a series of audio CD’s.
Another CD project I am working on is of the poems I have written over the years on my take of some of the remedies. See some samples in CD section.
A very magical event took place in my life when I took a year off and moved to the island of Lesbos, in Greece. I have been a part time resident there for the past 17 years. It is so beautiful and I have loved my deep connection with the land and nature. The air, the sea, the mountains, the trees, the wildflowers, the beach, the birds are all so enchanting and it is an incredible place in which to retreat. Since 2000 every May, I have been running an annual week long residential seminar there, where we have conducted some wonderful proofings. For more information look under Upcoming Events.
During my stays on the island I was drawn to make a series of flower essences, which resulted in The Greek Tree Essences. They all come from within a kilometer of my house.
For the past few years I have divided my time between California, London, and Lesbos. My main home is now in California, where I am semi retired from practice, busy writing, and doing some teaching. I am still teaching in the UK and the seminars in Greece are still happening. I am not sure if once you are a homeopath you can ever stop.
I have two beautiful fully-grown children, of whom I am immensely proud, and am living with my loving partner of 13 years. Life is good.
